When we restored the house in 2017, we made a long list of the usual amenities and then crossed most of them off. What we kept was simple, and one of the first decisions was the strangest on paper: a bicycle for every guest, parked and ready in the mudroom. Almost a decade later, it is the detail people write to us about.
The problem with driving everywhere
The Hill Country rewards a slow look. The trouble is that a car turns everything into a destination. You drive to a thing, you park, you see the thing, you drive back. The road between, which is often the best part, becomes something to get through. A bicycle fixes that. The road stops being a gap between stops and becomes the reason to go out at all.
Hartline Bend Road is nearly flat, lightly traveled, and shaded for most of its length. You can ride to the edge of the lavender fields, past the old fence lines, and back before breakfast cools. None of it requires a plan, which is the point.
What changed once they were here
We expected the bikes to be a nice touch. What we did not expect was how they changed the rhythm of a stay. Guests who arrive tense from the drive tend to take a bicycle out within the first hour, almost without thinking about it, and come back looser. People who would never call themselves cyclists ride every morning for three days straight.
The bikes also keep the car parked, which keeps the property quiet, which is the whole idea. A weekend here should feel like the opposite of the week you left. Helmets and a route map live in the mudroom, and the host will mark the best loops for the season. Take one out whenever you like. That is what they are for.
