Most people arrive on a Friday with a list twice as long as the weekend. We get it. The Hill Country packs a lot into a small radius, and the temptation is to chase all of it. The better plan is to pick a handful of things, leave room between them, and let the place set the pace. Here is how we would spend forty-eight hours, starting from the front porch.
Friday: arrive, then slow down
Check in by four, drop the bags, and resist the urge to go anywhere. Take a bicycle from the mudroom and ride the loop along Hartline Bend Road while the light is still long. It is flat, quiet, and lined with oaks that have been here longer than the house. Back by six, we will point you to a table in town for dinner, twelve minutes west on Main Street, or set you up by the fire pit with something from the kitchen if you would rather not move the car again.
If you have the energy after dinner, the porch is the right place to end the night. The sky out here is dark enough that you will see more than you expect, and the rocking chairs were chosen for exactly this.
Saturday: the long, unhurried day
Breakfast runs from eight to ten, so there is no alarm to set. Eat slowly, then take the day in two halves. In the morning, drive north to Calicheridge Vineyards, our sister property, for a tasting we will arrange before you arrive. The hills around the tasting room are worth the trip on their own.
Come back for an afternoon at the house. Swim, read on the porch, or take the bicycles out again toward the lavender fields, which peak in late spring. We keep Saturday afternoons open on purpose. A weekend that is scheduled to the minute is just work in a prettier setting.
For dinner, go back into Fredericksburg and walk Main Street before you eat. The shops stay open late on weekends, and the town is small enough to cover on foot in an hour.
Sunday: one last slow morning
Check-out is at eleven, which leaves time for a real breakfast and a final ride. Before you go, ask the host for the back-road route home. It adds twenty minutes and a dozen better views, and it is the right way to leave the Hill Country: slowly, with the windows down.
